Preventing Pregnancy: Spermicide

Spermicides can increase your protection against pregnancy. It can be bought as a cream, jelly, or suppository.

To use spermicide, a woman inserts it into her vagina just before sex. Since it will dissolve, it’s important not to insert it too long before sex. Spermicide works by immobilizing sperm and on its own is only 71% to 85% effective. Using it with a condom or other types of birth control will improve its effectiveness.
