Pregnancy: Group B Strep

Group B Strep or (GBS) infection is an infection that 15-40% of healthy, adult women carry in their vaginal or rectal areas. As there are no symptoms for GBS, most women carry it unaware of the dangers it poses to their newborn.

GBS infection is the number one cause of life threatening infections in newborns. GBS enters through the blood stream and can cause death, mental retardation and other serious diseases. Many doctors routinely screen for GBS, but it’s important to ask your doctor if he hasn't screened for it just to be safe.
